At the direction of the state government of Hessen, events with over 1000 visitors are now prohibited. Therefore the Music Fair will no longer take place in 2020. The Prolight+Sound has therefore also been canceled for 2020. There will be no catch-up date this year.
Update – notification from Messe Frankfurt – Corona Virus
In fact of the increased prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infections, the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs and Integration has issued a general degree to ban major events, at which more than 1,000 visitors are expected.
In the course of this, all events that were planned at the exhibition center during the period mentioned are canceled. At www.musikmesse-festival.com, visitors always receive up-to-date information on which of the events may still take place.
“Following the postponement of Musikmesse 2020, we did everything possible to hold a great festival of music in Frankfurt as scheduled and, in view of this, we are very sorry to have to cancel these events. However, we firmly believe that, under the current circumstances, this is unavoidable”, said Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt GmbH. “We would like to thank all artists, organisers and partners from the region for the great cooperation and are looking forward to the next edition in 2021”, added Wolfgang Weyand, Director, Musikmesse + Festival.

The Music Fair 2020 will take place from April 1st to 4th in Frankfurt am Main, celebrating its 40th anniversary. In parallel, the Prolight+Sound will run from March 31 to April 3 for the twenty-fifth time. An exciting renewal continues and deserves its chance.
An exciting renewal continues and deserves its chance. As an international trade fair for the music industry, the focus is still on everyone who works in the music industry, so to speak, but adds the Saturday again and opens the music fair on two days with special tickets for private visitors for special events, workshops and concerts. On the sales area “Musikmesse Plaza” in Hall 4.1 there is again the opportunity to buy instruments, sound carriers and lifestyle products directly and to participate in a briskly entertainment offer.
Concerts and performances on the exhibition grounds, including in the AGORA festival tent and in Hall 3 on the Acoustic Circle, Ultimate Circle and Silent Solutions Circle Stages, as well as in the whole city of Frankfurt am Main accompany the Music Fair as the “Music Fair Festival“.
At the same time, Prolight+Sound 2020 will run from March 31 to April 3 as a trade fair for event technology, celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Prolight+Sound is the international meeting point for technologies and services related to entertainment, shows, events, audiovisual system integration and content creation. So there is everything here that makes, for example, a performance by a world-famous band a show of superlatives, but also technical equipment from small clubs, discotheques, theaters and much more. Anyone who has never visited this trade fair should treat themselves to the visual flash. The Prolight+Sound takes place in Halls 8, 11, 12, the Galeria, the Outdoor Areal F10 and in the Festhalle, which is in the hands of PRG every year with the LEA Stage. The ProDJ Sample Music Festival in Galeria Level 0 is a pretty cool event.
So the situation has changed significantly, as has already been felt in recent years. The Music Fair used to be huge and the Prolight+Sound was rather small. In the progressively digitizing world, the original core of the Music Fair has shrunk into one hall and the Prolight+Sound has exploded in size. But workshops and concert events are also growing. It is understandable that the Fair Frankfurt had to react to these changes. Let he Music Fair surprise us.
Home of Drums
As an innovation, the Music Fair presents “Home of Drums”, a concept that connects product presentations, knowledge transfer, concerts and performances as an extended workshop for drummers and percussionists, and also wants to create closeness and opportunities for discussion with the professionals. For this purpose, an accompanying online platform homeofdrums.com was created, on which drum fans can network permanently and take part in video lessons with well-known artists. The idea is to create a community for drummers and percussionists that has a digital space all year round and can come together once a year at the Music Fair in the real world. Not a bad idea. A large number of mixed test stations have also been announced, where visitors can try out instruments live. Of course I am fully in my main element there and very excited to see how this premiere will go. The “Home of Drums” only takes place from April 3rd to 4th and is placed in Forum 1.
At Music4Kids young visitors have the chance to take their first musical steps and test instruments. On site, there will be a team of music teachers from the Frankfurt Music Academy to help participants. Everyone is invited to try it out. The area is split into different musical-instrument segments, so each group of instruments forms its own experiential world. The spectrum covered stretches from classic percussion, via guitars and string instruments, to electronic instruments, such as e-drums and digital pianos.
As in previous years, kindergarten groups from the entire Rhine-Main region are invited to participate.
At the DJCON live demonstrations, DJ sessions, trends and news from the world of turntablerockers can be experienced and tried out for yourself in Forum 0. The latest DJ hardware and software is presented here and makes a meet-and-greet of DJs and colleagues from all over the world possible.
Musical instruments for people with disabilities
Somehow everything becomes more and more special. And actually this is an exciting time. My mission to sensitize instrument manufacturers to the needs of musicians with disabilities also shifts a bit from the classical instruments to support possibilities from the digital or technological world of music making.
People with handicaps will find important information about the Fair visit here:
Music Fair Planning and Preparation
In this regard, I will soon be reporting on a very special company from England that is not represented at the Musikmesse or Prolight + Sound, but is the only company worldwide that only develops instruments or musical possibilities for people who consider themselves to be handicapped designate and create great participation, happiness and hope in a great way. Look forward to this report, because there are things you won’t believe if you haven’t seen them.
Competition for extraordinary musical instruments
Perhaps I will also discover something in the “Competition for extraordinary musical instruments“, in which everyone can submit designs of extraordinary instruments. Everything is allowed and nothing too special, it is only important that you are the inventor of the instrument. A jury of experts assesses all entries. The most original three instruments will be shown at the Music Fair 2020 and will receive awards and prize money:
1st place: award and € 500 prize money
2nd place: certificate and € 300 prize money
3rd place: certificate and € 200 prize money
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how the Music Fair and the Prolight+Sound have developed.
